The Minnesota Department of Transportation announced Tuesday that they, in partnership with the Department of Employment and Economic Development, have awarded $18 million in grants for transportation projects across the state, including a Duluth project near Spirit Mountain.

According to their press release, $247,000 will go towards a project located at Grand Avenue (Highway 23) and Warwick Street, including the design and installation of a new traffic signal at the base of the Spirit Mountain Recreation Area.

This is in correlation with a right of way acquisition and construction of a new city street, Kayak Bay Road, for which funding has already been secured by the city of Duluth and St. Louis County.  This future street will create a new four-way intersection on Highway 23.

This project will be important for vehicle and pedestrian safety as increased traffic at the intersection is expected with the planned development and existing recreational amenities.
