The Duluth East Greyhounds entered this year's Minnesota State Boys Hockey Tournament as the #1 overall seed in Class AA, attaining a record of 27-1, with the only loss in their schedule coming to Minnetonka in January. East's opponent, Lakeville South, entered the contest with a 20-8 record.

The Greyhounds jumped ahead early, with Trevor Olson netting the first goal of the game at the 3:37 mark in the first period. After a quiet end to the first, Lakeville South's Patrick Lauderdale tied the game in the middle of the second period. In a move to gain some momentum at the end of the second period, Duluth East pulled Dylan Parker out of the net, but the extra attacker didn't add to the ability to score.

Tied at one each entering the third, Lakeville South's John Wiitala netted an early goal; which would be the only score going into the later part of the period. With under two minutes left in the game, Duluth East pulled Parker out of the net again, and Justin Kloos of Lakeville South took advantage of the open net, bringing the game to a two goal deficit for the Greyhounds. With the extra attacker, the Greyhounds' Trevor Olson netted his second goal for the night with 10 seconds left in the period, but it wouldn't be enough as time expired before East could drive on the net again to tie things up.

After falling 3-2 to Lakeville South, the Greyhounds will move into the consolation bracket, finishing their season at Mariucci Arena at the University of Minnesota. The first game of the consolation round will take place Friday, and if they advance through the first round, they will play the consolation final game at noon on Saturday.
