The San Diego County medical examiner ruled yesterday (May 4) that former NFL linebacker Junior Seau's death from a gunshot to the chest was suicide. There is still plenty of speculation behind why Seau took his life earlier this week, with family members completely caught off guard by the news of his death. When he was found, no note was left.

Seau's family has decided to allow researchers to study his brain to explore the damage caused by two decades of intense play in the NFL, including the long-term impact of concussions on players. According to Seau's ex wife, he did suffer concussions though his time in the league.

Donations to science like this aren't completely abnormal. Former Chicago Bears and New York Giants safety Dave Duerson committed suicide last year in a similar fashion as Seau. Duerson left a note requesting his brain be donated for science. Research on his brain found that concussions played a major role in mental problems he suffered.
