Remember when Black Friday was a true shopping event?  Then retailers started opening on Thanksgiving, forcing employees to work and ruining many Black Friday traditions.  Today, the Mall Of America made a big announcement that could impact what other retailers decide to do on the holiday.

StarTribune.com is reporting that the Mall Of America has notified its employees and tenants that it will close the mall, including Nickelodeon Universe and its movie theaters, on Thanksgiving Day for the first time.

Its 520-plus stores will have the option to open on the holiday, but mall executives reportedly expect that most will decide to remain closed.  If all stores do decide to remain closed, 13,000 employees would then have the holiday off.

I hope that other retailers follow their lead and also remain closed on Thanksgiving.  I realize that people have to work on holidays, but having stores open is, to me, is a decision simply made out of greed.
