Feast Your Eyes on the Splashy New ‘Rogue One: A Star Wars Story’ IMAX Poster
No Star Wars release is complete without a theatrical poster featuring a mural of disembodied faces all looking in different directions. Artist Drew Struzan made that format into a staple of the theatrical poster world, providing the Star Wars franchise with its most instantly recognizable promotional material, not to mention his fine work for the Indiana Jones and Back to the Future pictures. Those who have been following the long rollout of previews for the upcoming Rogue One: A Star Wars Story will be the first to point out that the production has already taken on its very own face-packed poster back in October. But the people demand more, and as they demand, so shall they receive (courtesy of USA Today):
Aside from the fact that this poster’s sort of in the shape of an inverted triangle (#illuminati), set against the backdrop of a fleet of spaceships descending on the Death Star, what’s new? Let’s take a roll call and compare with that of the previous poster: both prominently feature resistance leader Jyn Erso (Felicity Jones), battle-scarred veteran Saw Gerrera (Forest Whitaker), Rebellion officer Cassian Andor (Diego Luna), blind fighter Chirrut Imwe (Donnie Yen), roving assassin Baze Malbus (Jiang Wen), pilot Bodhi Rook (Riz Ahmed), and lovable android K-2SO (voiced by Alan Tudyk). The lone exchange is that the new poster swaps out villainous Orson Krennic (Ben Mendelsohn) for Jyn’s lost father, Gale (Mads Mikkelsen). Good, so that’s all cleared up now.
It’s a slightly more stylish take on the earlier poster, though they both have a way of making you nostalgic for the old, hand-drawn posters over the new photo-touched ones. At any rate, the film comes to theaters December 16.
