There are some things in life you never really think you'll have the opportunity to drive. At the top of my list, for example, is a Zamboni. Another thing most people don't get to drive is a city bus, but the Duluth Transit Authority is providing the opportunity to scratch that one off the list.

The DTA has announced a "Your Turn to Drive" event that will offer anyone in the Northland community with a valid driver's license the chance to test drive a DTA 40-foot bus from their fleet. Not only that, but you can also test drive a STRIDE paratransit vehicle.

The event will be held Friday, October 14, and Saturday, October 15 at the Duluth Heritage Center, located at 120 South 30th Avenue West. Drivers will get to do their test drives in Duluth Heritage Center parking lot, in the barricaded western portion.

If you’d like to participate, you'll need to register online in advance and select up to 3 time slots that work for you between October 14th and October 15th. All participants will get a quick overview of safe bus operation, followed by a chance to drive the bus on a closed course through a variety of obstacles and scenarios.

The Duluth Transit Authority will have team members and union representatives on hand to provide information to all participants. There will also be refreshments provided for everyone in attendance.

This event is free and open to the public, so even if you don't sign up to drive you should head over to the Duluth Heritage Center to check it out as spectators are also welcome to come to cheer on the rookie Bus Operators.

Using data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (released in April 2020), we analyzed the average price for a gallon of unleaded regular gasoline from 1976 to 2020 along with the Consumer Price Index (CPI) for unleaded regular gasoline from 1937 to 1976, including the absolute and inflation-adjusted prices for each year.

Read on to explore the cost of gas over time and rediscover just how much a gallon was when you first started driving.
