The NFL season is winding down, and while many teams are still in the hunt for a playoff spot; the Minnesota Vikings are already thinking about next years draft. While we do not know what spot the Vikings will draft, it is a good bet they will be a top five selection. Even though there are many holes the Vikings need to fix, the main spot is quarterback, and the next NFL draft is loaded with potential franchise quarterbacks. I have looked into the five quarterbacks that I feel are the top five quarterbacks in this upcoming draft class. In judging the quarterbacks, I have taken into consideration the following, pocket presence, arm strength, accuracy, mechanics, and down field vision. Also, arrogance is a big plus in my overall grading, because all the elite quarterbacks in the NFL today have some arrogance.

    Tajh Boyd

The first thing I notice when watching Boyd is how effortlessly he moves throughout the pocket. It almost seems like Boyd is moving in slow motion when moving in the pocket. The big plus on Boyd is the arm strength he possesses. When needed Boyd can unleash a 60 plus yard bomb, something Christian Ponder can not do. The field vision is above average, and so is his arm accuracy. The one thing that is glaring is his mechanics. Boyd short arms a lot of throws, which hasn't hindered him in Clemson, but it is something that can derail an NFL career, just ask Tim Tebow. A key thing I noticed his Boyd doesn't display a level of arrogance, which is something that is a trait found in franchise quarterbacks. I would rate Boyd a late first round, early second round pick. I wouldn't mind the Vikings drafting him if it involved them trading back into the first round if the Vikings used their first pick on a different position. I see Boyd as better version of E.J Manuel.

    Aj McCarron

First impression is that McCarron looks like a better version of Eli Manning when Eli was in college. McCarron has a great sense in the pocket, not the most fleet of foot; but has just enough speed to expand the pocket, and keep the play alive. The downside on McCarron is the arm strength which is average, and sometimes McCarron can get the ball 50 plus yards when needed. The big plus side on McCarron is his mechanics, which looks flawless, and has the ability to improvise when needed, which means McCarron changes arm angles in order to get the ball to his receiver. The glaring weakness on McCarron is that he likes to throw off his back foot a lot, which gives him less arm strength, and then the ball comes out wobbly. I like McCarron a lot, and wouldn't mind the Vikings trading back with their first pick, because I see McCarron a middle first round pick. McCarron has signs of a potential elite quarterback like a winning attitude, a proven winner, and is coach-able, but the big question is, can McCarron continue to succeed once he leaves Alabama, because McCarron could be just a product of a winning system. The true test will be, can McCarron win in the NFL.

    Teddy Bridgewater

First impression, raw, but explosive, and a slightly better version of Geno Smith coming out of college. However, I see potential that Teddy can be better then Cam Newton if he continues his career arc. I see a player that has eyes in the back of his helmet, and has the ability to escape the pocket when forced to. I see a very live arm, that can unleash the deep ball very well, but just like Tajh Boyd, Teddy has a hitch in his mechanics that might hurt his potential in the NFL. The big thing that I wish Bridgewater would display his some level of arrogance, because when I see him play it reminds me a lot of E.J Manuel who is a calm quarterback. If Teddy could display a level of arrogance that Newton displays then I would love to see the Vikings draft him, because I see Bridgewater as a top 10 pick. The one thing I notice that Bridgewater does better then the previous two quarterbacks is his ability to find the open receiver. Teddy doesn't just lock onto one receiver the whole time, yet finds his second, or third option on a play. I feel that Bridgewater is safe pick, in that he displays great skills, and well above attributes, yet the next two quarterbacks have potential to be franchise changers.

    Aaron Murray

Aaron Murray has moved up on my board a lot this past year, coming into this season I felt Murray was the fifth best quarterback in this draft class, however the more I see Murray, the more I see an elite NFL quarterback in the making. There is not much to criticize, except maybe the deep ball, because Murray averages around 50 yards for his deep ball, but when I see Murray play I see a combination of Drew Brees and Aaron Rodgers. Murray can make a NFL throw now even in college, and Aaron can roll out to either left, or right and make an accurate throw, and can look off defenders. I see very smart quarterback in the pocket, with above average average footwork, that can escape the pocket when needed. I see Murray being overlooked because of Teddy Bridgewater, and falling in the first round, which means I hope the Vikings could trade back into the first round for him. I see a quarterback that can become a franchise changer, and has the arrogance, and skill set that puts him in the Brees, Rodgers, and maybe the Manning, and Brady category. Murray mechanics are almost perfect, and rarely throws off his back foot, and has a great throwing motion, which will benefit his career because he won't have to worry about changing his mechanics once he enters the NFL. Either Murray or the next quarterback on this list would change the Vikings franchise for good.

    Johnny Manziel

I will be honest that I am a little biased because I really like Manziel, however I love the arrogance that he displays, it reminds me of Tom Brady. Yes Manziel has had his troubles this year, but he put all that behind him, and is putting up better stats this season then last season when he won the Heisman. Manziel has improved his mechanics, and his arm strength this season, and his pocket presence is off the charts. His ability to extend plays are unlike anything we have seen in NCAA history. Can you imagine Manziel and Adrian Peterson running the read-option? I think with any high profile player like Manziel there are red flags like his character, and his commitment to the team, which could result in Manziel becoming the next Ryan Leaf, but I truly feel that in this case the reward outweighs the risk because Manziel is better then Leaf was, and if Manziel is still sitting on the board when the Vikings are up to pick, I would be very surprised if they passed on him, because Manziel is a franchise changer, and could become the next young elite quarterback in the NFL. When I see Manziel play he reminds me a lot of Drew Brees, because like Brees, Manziel is short, yet has a live arm, and has the competitive edge like Brees. Manziel might not have the deep ball capability like the other quarterbacks in this draft class, but his running ability makes up for that lack of a deep ball. I would rank Manziel the second best quarterback in this class behind Bridgewater, but I feel that Manziel would be bette suited for the Vikings then Bridgewater because of Manziel skill set, and his mindset. Also Manziel is a top 10 selection.
