Chocolate Milk Recall Issued Over Allergen Concerns

An Illinois-based dairy brand of chocolate milk is being recalled due to allergen concerns.  Prairie Farms is voluntarily-recalling specific batches of it's chocolate milk product over concerns that the gallons may contain trace amounts of egg - which if consumed by someone who is allergic can cause "serious or life-threatening allergic reactions".

The recall stems from egg nog which is also processed in the same plant.  According to the United States Food and Drug Administration, the cross-contamination was discovered after a valve-malfunction.  At the present time there have been no known reported illnesses or allergic reactions.  The voluntary recall has been issued by Prairie Farms out of an abundance of concern and caution.

Only two of the companies chocolate milk product are included in the voluntary recall:  its Prairie Farms Premium Flavored Chocolate Milk gallons and Prairie Farms 1% Lowfat Chocolate Milk gallons - both with a "Best By Date" of "Dec. 4, 2020".  Prairie Farms other chocolate milk gallons that are processed in the same plant (plant code 17-284) are not included in the recall; those products include their Premium Flavored Choclate, 1% Lowfat Chocolate, 2% Reduced Fat Chocolate, and Fat Free Chocolate.

According to the United States Food and Drug Administration, Prairie Farms is working in collaboration with their agency to investigate the situation and comply with the necessary recall procedures.  Customers who believe they have the gallons of the recalled chocolate milk should destroy the product or return it to the store from which it was bought for an exchange.
