Colts the Latest Team on Favre-Watch

The chatter just won't stop. The sports news world is continuing to stir up stories suggesting Brett Favre is going to return from yet another "retirement" to act as some team's savior. Some out-of-context commentary had the sports world abuzz that #4 may be looking at a backup role in Philly, then the Eagles picked up Vince Young; squishing that rumor. Sights were then set on Miami, with the Dolphins in need of a reliable starter under center - enter Matt Moore.

The latest Favre-Watch target is Indianapolis. The Colts, being perennial playoff contenders, look to make another appearance this season; but quarterback Peyton Manning is recovering from neck surgery and has yet to make a preseason appearance. This is setting the stage for panic in Indy, and adding fuel to the rumor fire is word that Colts owner Jim Irsay paid a visit to Hattiesburg over the weekend. Irsay tweeted:

Brad,I'm in Hattiesburg...is it right or left at the Firechief?

The Colts having interest in Favre isn't far-fetched, being their quarterback has been the rock on which the team has stood for the past several years. Depth at QB hasn't been something of high concern or focus for the franchise with Peyton holding a record of 227 consecutive starts.

Curtis Painter is the projected starter as of now. He has taken snaps as the starter in the first two preseason games, showing shaky results so far. Behind Painter is another unseasoned veteran and an undrafted rookie.

Favre's agent Bus Cook reported he hasn't heard any interest from the Colts organization, but that doesn't rule out a possible move by the team. This is a pattern consistent with previous preseasons, however. Both Cook and Favre kept tight-lipped until a deal was reached in past seasons. This very well may be the case again this year. Then again, Brett seemed pretty sincere in his radio interview when he said he lacked the motivation to play.
