Premier Minnesota Festival Suddenly Cancels Popular Festivities
The Northland is full of great summer traditions that we look forward to every year. There's the opening of businesses like Gordy's Hi-Hat and the Portland Malt Shoppe, outdoor concerts at Bayfront Festival Park, Movies In The Park, and other fairs and festivals.
We assume that every year these things will return for all to enjoy, so it comes as a bit of a shock when something everyone enjoys every summer suddenly announces it's likely not going to happen this year.
That's what happened this week involving a popular Northland celebration.
Proctor Hoghead Celebration Makes Surprise Announcement On Facebook
The annual Hoghead Celebration is sponsored by the Proctor Lions Club and it has earned its reputation as a "premier summer celebration" not just for Proctor, but the entire Twin Ports area.
Every year, we look forward to golf & softball tournaments, a parade, kids' games, food vendors, a pet parade, a street dance, a car show, and more.
However, on Tuesday, July 16, a surprise and disappointing announcement was made through the Proctor Celebration Facebook page.
It simply stated that due to unforeseen circumstances and a lack of volunteers, the Hoghead parade and street fair are currently canceled. They had been scheduled to take place on Saturday, August 17.
Organizers added that they hoped another individual or organization would want to take on these events.
If there's any potential silver lining in this announcement, it's that organizers added shortly thereafter that other Hoghead events were still scheduled to take place. These events include:
- Wednesday, August 14: Powerhouse Car Show
- Friday, August 16: Movie on the golf course
- Saturday, August 17: Golf scramble at Proctor Golf Course
I say potential silver lining because in making this announcement, organizers used the phrase "as of now". That doesn't inspire a tremendous amount of confidence, but hopefully, at least those events can still happen.
Perhaps this news will create a renewed interest for people to volunteer at Hoghead, and another group or individual can take the initiative to save the Hoghead parade and street fair. However, it would have to be soon as the events were supposed to take place in a month.

I guess we'll all continue to follow the Proctor Hoghead Celebration Facebook page for updates and hope for good news.
