Lane Closures For I-35 In Duluth Scheduled For March 24-26
It's a sure sign of the upcoming summer road construction season. While the Minnesota Department of Transportation has continued to work on the multi-year Twin Ports Interchange Project all winter long, now that spring is here, drivers should anticipate to see a lot more activity.
That uptick in activity will also bring traffic impacts to Northland drivers throughout the busy I-35 corridor.
An upcoming set of work tasks for the MNDOT crews will bring with it some lane closures inside the Twin Ports Interchange Project along I-35. Those closures will start the evening of Friday, March 24 and last though the evening on Sunday, March 26.
MNDOT crews will work to erect bridge girders in the area. The girders are advance work that's needed for the project to advance forward.
Drivers will encounter the closures starting 7:00 PM on March 24 and they're expected to last through 6:00 PM on March 26. Here's the specific details on what lanes will be closed and what impacts there will be:
- Southbound I-35 will be routed into a single lane onto Lower Michigan Street between Garfield Avenue and 27th Avenue West
- Northbound I-35 will close completely between 40th Avenue West and Garfield Avenue. All northbound traffic will be routed off I-35 at 40th Avenue West. The signed detour will follow Highway 2 (the Bong Bridge) to Superior, then onto Highway 535 (the Blatnik Bridge) and back to Duluth
MNDOT expects that the work will be fully wrapped up by Sunday night, unless they encounter weather or other unforeseen delays. Full updates on the Twin Ports Interchange Project are available on the Minnesota Department of Transportation's website.
