By definition, the St. Louis County Public Works Department is charged with planning, maintaining, and improving the roads we drive on and the transportation systems in place that facilitate that. One of the main concerns is always the safety of those on the road.

Recently the Public Works Department was awarded some grant money to help with their general planning.

St. Louis County is sharing that they're receiving a $200,000 grant that will be used to help them put together a Comprehensive Safety Action Plan. The money comes from the U.S. Department of Transportation's Safe Streets and Roads for All (SS4A) grant program. St. Louis County i3 one of 510 local jurisdictions that will receive a share of the $800 million in total funds that are available.

With the funding, St. Louis County plans on "building upon [their] current County Road Safety Plan and include a focus on vulnerable users such as pedestrians and bicyclists". The first step for the department is developing a list of "priorities and recommend[ed] targeted safety projects". Officials with the St. Louis County Public Works Department expect this phase to last about two years. Afterwards, the new Safety Action Plan would be put into practice.

The county will put the incoming funding to good use. St. Louis County Commissioner Keith Musolf - who also chairs the County Board's Public Works Committee - explains:

"We are grateful to receive this funding and excited to put it to work to make the county's roads safer for all users."

The funding from the U.S. Department of Transportation's Safe Streets and Roads for All grant comes in part from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law that's "intended to reduce and eliminate traffic fatalities and serious injuries".
