The lights are off and being packed away for the season at Bentleyville, but a last minute gift shop heist sent Duluth Police on the hunt for a real life Grinch.

A Busy Holiday Season Comes to a Rough End in Duluth

Damage and Stolen Merchandise Reported in Duluth

According to police, the break in caused extensive damage that cost hundreds of dollars to repair. Roughly $2,000 worth of merchandise was also stolen from the gift shop.

The Duluth Police Department reports that 47-year-old John Carter was arrested on Friday, January 9, and now faces pending charges of third degree burglary.

Police Respond to the Holiday Theft

In a statement, the Duluth Police Department said, “The act of burglarizing a free event that brings thousands of people to our city is disappointing. We appreciate the full cooperation from Bentleyville and the thorough investigation conducted into this incident.”

While the incident was frustrating, it was not entirely unprecedented. Bentleyville has dealt with previous acts of vandalism and theft over the years, though none have been enough to put a lasting damper on the holiday spirit surrounding the event.

Despite the setback, Bentleyville remains one of Duluth’s most beloved seasonal attractions, and organizers say the focus remains on welcoming families back again next winter, lights on and Grinch free.
