When is Minimum Wage Going Up in South Dakota?

One day after South Dakota emerged as one of 28 states in America where median income levels remain unchanged from last year comes word that there will be more money coming in for those in one particular category.

The state's minimum wage is going up.

Beginning January 1, the rate will increase from $10.80 per hour to $11.20 per hour for non-tipped employees.

The hike is part of an annual cost of living adjustment, as measured in the Consumer Price Index from the U.S. Department of Labor. The increases are mandated by South Dakota law 60-11-3.2, which was passed by the South Dakota Legislature in 2005.

Tipped employees in the state will see more money in their paychecks in 2024.

The minimum wage for those employees will increase to $5.60 per hour.

Bickel lives and works on a cattle ranch operated by herself, her father, Jack, and his brother Keith. How far out in the country is she? How does 50 miles west of Mobridge, South Dakota sound? Yep, mountain time out there.

Life is so different in Sioux Falls, South Dakota compared to what our friends on the farm and ranches deal with. It's a half-mile to the grocery store for our family. For Robin, it's 17 miles. However, it's a quick step out her door and she's right in the middle of where a lot of the groceries come from.
