Kabetogama, MN (KROC-AM News)- The National Park Service has identified the park ranger who lost his life during a rescue in Minnesota over the weekend.

A news release issued by the National Park Service says the law enforcement ranger responded late Sunday morning to a call for assistance from a civilian vessel in distress on Namakan Lake in Voyageurs National Park. 

The statement says the Park Ranger was towing the civilian boat with a National Park Service boat when it capsized and sent the ranger and the three civilians into the water.

Officials say the three family members were able to swim to safety, but the Ranger vanished in the water. A search was launched, and his body was recovered from the lake around 3:20 PM. 

The National Park Service says high winds and rough waters were reported at the time.

The deadly incident remains under investigation.The US Border Patrol, the St. Louis County Sheriff's Office, and the Kabetogama Fire Department assisted in the search and the recovery.

Ranger Who Died During Voyageurs National Park Rescue in Northern MN ID'D

On Monday night, the park service identified the fallen ranger as 55-year-old Kevin Grossheim of Kabetogama. The news release calls him a “treasured member of the community.” 

Grossheim also served as a volunteer firefighter Kabetogama and was a Park Ranger for more than 20 years. He is being remembered as a beloved husband and friend. 

American flags at all U.S. National Parks are being flown at half-staff in honor of Grossheim’s heroics. Details regarding Grossheim’s memorial service are still being finalized.
