Woman Ordered to Prison For Rochester Area Man’s OD Death
Rochester, MN (KROC-AM News) - Today was sentencing day for a Stewartville woman convicted of participating in a deadly drug overdose last fall.
43-year-old Shannon Brown earlier admitted to a second-degree manslaughter charge as part of a plea deal that led to the dismissal of a third-degree murder charge. Brown was accused of supplying the drugs that resulted in the overdose death of 45-year-old Michael Janvrin.
The Rochester area man was found dead at a rural residence near the town of Pleasant Grove east of Stewartville on the morning of October 21st. An autopsy by the Southeast Minnesota Medical Examiners Office ruled his death was caused by the toxic effects of fentanyl and methamphetamine.
The criminal complaint against the Stewartville woman alleged that she was with the victim when he collapsed after ingesting some drugs around 3 AM the same day. The court documents say Brown left the home about 30 minutes later and did not call 911 until nearly 9 AM after she returned to the house with two juveniles.
The evidence listed in the criminal complaint included text messages obtained by investigators reviewing cell phone records. The charges say law messages include one sent by Brown to an adult female the morning that Janvrin died that stated, "there is drugs in the house."
A juvenile witness also told an Olmsted County Sheriff's Office investigator that she heard Brown saying, "it's all my fault, it's all my fault. It was me. I gave him a baggie and it's what killed him." The witness indicated Brown was speaking with someone on a speakerphone at the time.
Another witness told investigators about conversations she had with Brown, who allegedly told her that she found a bag of unidentified drugs and brought them to the victim's residence. The charges alleged that Brown told the witness that Janvrin collapsed onto the floor after taking two hits of the substance.
Brown was sentenced today to four years in prison and was assigned to the Shakopee State Prison. She was given credit for the 131 days she has already spent in jail. According to the Minnesota Department of Corrections, the earliest that she will be eligible for release is in September 2026.
