It might be the smaller of the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport's two terminals, but there are some big changes planned for Terminal 2 in the future.

The Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport (MSP) is the largest airport in the North Star State. So it's no surprise that a LOT of Minnesotans (and Iowans and Wisconsinites and others) head through the TSA checkpoints at both of MSP's two terminals each year when traveling across the country and overseas.

It helps that you can fly to A LOT of different places directly from MSP without having to catch a connecting flight elsewhere. In fact, the airport says airlines at MSP served 163 nonstop destinations from the North Star State in 2023, up from 156 destinations in 2023 and 145 destinations in 2022.

Did you know that 18 different airlines fly in and out of MSP? Here's the current line-up:

+ Aer Lingus
+ Air Canada
+ AirFrance
+ Alaska Airlines
+ Allegiant Airlines
+ American Airlines
+ Condor Airlines
+ Delta Air Lines
+ Denver Air
+ Frontier Airlines
+ Icelandair
+ KLM Royal Dutch Airlines
+ Lufthansa Airlines
+ Spirit Airlines
+ Southwest Airlines
+ Sun Country Airlines
+ United Airlines
+ WestJet

While most of those airlines fly out of the main Terminal 1, MSP's Terminal 2 is home to Allegiant Air, Condor Airlines, Frontier Airlines, Icelandair, Southwest Airlines, and Minnesota's own Sun Country Airlines.

And now, the Metropolitan Airports Commission (MAC) that owns and operates MSP Airport just announced that Terminal 2 is in for some big changes, with several new shops, restaurants, and even a new full-service restaurant and bar all in the works.

According to a MAC release, those new plans are all part of the $263 million Terminal 2 expansion project, and will be built out in four separate phases, or 'batches.' These new concepts, including six new food, beverage, and retail venues, are all set to be completed by 2027. The new concepts include:

Batch 1: A new Hometown Market which will 'feature the designs of Minnesota-based mural artist and designer Ashley Mary and will offer a rotation of 36 local vendors, showcasing Minnesota’s vibrant businesses,' including new officially-licensed Prince merchandise, MAC said.

Batch 2: A new full-service restaurant and bar. The MAC release noted the exact  name and operator will be 'determined at a later date.'

Batch 3: A new Caribou Coffee, which will include 'a 24-hour self-serve station featuring Caribou’s specialty-grade coffee and espresso-based beverages,' MAC said.

Batch 4: Several new, quick-serve restaurants, including a 'refreshed Subway' which will be joined by McDonald's and MSP Airport’s first illycaffè, MAC noted.

With all these improvements planned, it's not a surprise MSP was once again named the best airport in North America for the third year in a row last year, marking the seventh time in the last eight years it won that distinction.
