I was grocery shopping the other day when I surprisingly couldn't buy any eggs. It's a pretty common staple in grocery stores, and one of those pretty essential food items. I was surprised when I got to the egg case and it was completely empty with a note.

I had planned on picking up a couple dozen eggs for dyeing for this Easter Sunday. I was prepared to pay over $3 a dozen for eggs because that's what I've been seeing lately. Unfortunately, that wasn't possible at this store. I have still been able to find eggs at some other places, but we sure are paying through the teeth on them.

It has to do with a few factors, including the bird flu outbreak causing issues. Entire flocks have died off, and that has made the supply shorter. The continuing supply chain issues and high feed prices also make the problem worse. It's happening in the Midwest and the central US.

Fortunately, the avian flu rarely spreads to humans, and the CDC says there are no current food safety issues.

The price of eggs has almost doubled in a month according to this Fox News Affiliate, and that may lead to cutting back on the Easter tradition of coloring eggs. The Easter Bunny might be better off this year getting those plastic eggs that you can hide a treat inside.
