Minnesota and Wisconsin rival each other in many things, but when it comes to who the better drivers are, it's no contest. The latest statistical data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (2015 data) shows that the Gopher State leads the country, while the Badger State falls in the bottom half.

Carinsurancecomparison.com compiled the NHTSA data into a ranking of the best and worst drivers by state around the country. They analyzed crash data in five different categories to get to their conclusions: fatalities per 100 million miles traveled, failure to obey traffic signals or wear seat belts, drunken driving, speeding and careless driving.

After factoring in all five of these categories, Minnesota claims the top spot as the state with the best overall drivers, while Wisconsin falls in a tie with Mississippi for 34th best.

For Minnesota, the weakest category among the five analyzed is speeding.  While Minnesota ranks pretty well in all of the other categories, Minnesotans are the in the top half of states with a speeding problem, coming in at 23rd.

Wisconsin, on the other hand, falls in the top 10 worst offenders in both the failure to obey traffic laws and drunk driving categories. The one place where Wisconsin ranks well is in fatalities per miles traveled, coming in among the 10 safest in this category.
