An upcoming road construction project on Highway 53 near Eveleth will bring safety improvements to the intersections in that area.  It will also bring traffic impacts for many along a busy stretch of highway that heads north to the Iron Range.

Right now, the Minnesota Department of Transportation has the road construction project scheduled for 2025.  However, ahead of the work - they're taking the time to update the general public about the plans, answer questions, and solicit feedback to generate a completed project that everyone is happy with.

To provide those updates, MNDOT has scheduled a variety of public meetings. One of those is scheduled for Thursday, April 21 starting at 5:00 PM.  MNDOT will provide access to this meeting in two forms:

  • In person:  At the St. Louis County Public Works Building:  7823 Highway 135 in Virginia.  Attendees are instructed to park in the lower parking lot in the "Training Center" area.
  • Virtual:  The Minnesota Department of Transportation is providing a link to access the meeting digitally on their website.  You can also call in at 855-282-6330. The meeting code you'll need for both of these access points is 2492 860 2958.

The Minnesota Department of Transportation summarized the scope of the proposed road work at the Eveleth intersections on Highway 53:

"Safety improvements are being evaluated at Bourgin Road, Progress Parkway, and Hat Trick Avenue intersections. The improvements will take into account the new schools being constructed to the east of Highway 53."

Along with the safety improvements that would be realized by all drivers who use Highway 53 in that area, one of the main aims of the work by MNDOT is to help ease the anticipated congestion in that area due to the new school construction.
