A new program in Wisconsin will be putting dogs behind bars for a good cause. Prison inmates will train dogs for veterans.

Patriot K9s of Wisconsin has teamed up with Redgranite Correctional Institution in Redgranite, Wisconsin for new program called Paws For Patriots. Redgranite is a medium security institution that houses approximately 1,030 male inmates.

Patriot K9s statement is "In my darkest hour, when I needed your hand, I found your paw." Their mission:

Helping veterans win the war against suicide, depression and anxiety by empowering them with the use of a service dog. Veterans learn to train and care for their own service dog and regain independence in civilian life and a sense of self mastery.

Their goal:

Patriot K9s Of Wisconsin provides training and education to both Veterans/Service Members and Service Dog Candidates together, to create the highest quality Service Dog Team at no cost to disabled Veterans and Active-Duty Members impacted by Military related Post Traumatic Stress Disorder(PTSD), Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) and Military Sexual Trauma (MST).

I think this new program is so cool. Patriot K9s has placed five puppies with inmates that will be raising the puppies and training them. The puppies will stay with the inmates 24/7 for the next year before they will be placed with veterans. What a way to give back.

There are other ways to help the organization as well. You could foster, volunteer, and even raise a pup yourself to train before being placed with a veteran. Check out a trailer for a documentary about veterans who are paired with service dogs below:
