This has been bothering me for weeks now, ever since the Summer Olympics were on, and the media gave the women gymnastic team the nickname "Fab 5". Every time the gymnastic team was called the fab 5 I would get so upset it would make me sick.

I am not being sexist or even dissing gymnastics. I know your thinking by now, why is this nickname making me made right? it is because the nickname already belongs to the University of Michigan basketball team of the early 90's

Nickname's are earned, not just handed out, and in this case the gymnastic team earned a nickname, but not the nickname of "Fab 5"; that nickname is retired, and should NEVER be used again. If you do not know the history of Fab 5 just follow the link to it.

In sports we remember teams by nicknames, like the Minnesota Vikings teams of the late 60's and early 70's by the name of the Purple People Eaters, or 1970's Cincinnati Reds were called the Big Red Machine. We even remember players by nicknames like Wayne Gretzky as the Great One, or Babe Ruth as the Great Bambino.

Nicknames are cherished within the sports community, today it seems like we are so eager to crown someone the next "Chosen one" like Sidney Crosby or LeBron James, etc, but to handout a nickname already in use is just plain STUPID. We will never have another boxer called The Greatest because that belongs to Muhammad Ali, or we will never have a team called the Dream Team, "sorry 2012 men's Olympic basketball team" because the 1992 team was and will always be the Dream Team.

If a player or team has earned the right for a nickname then come up with a new one, don't take a nickname already used, because it will make you look uncreative, and stupid. The Fab 5 is and always will be the about the University of Michigan Men basketball team, and is not about the 2012 women Olympic gymnastic team.
