The 2001 St. Scholastica baseball team took the field for the first time in 2001 against the 10th ranked University of St. Thomas. The Saints couldn't have asked for a better start, beating the Tommies 10-6.

The game was originally scheduled to be played at the campus of Washington University in St. Louis, but due do rain late Friday the field was deemed unplayable today. After some scrambling, the teams got a backup facility thanks to Southwestern Illinois College two hours prior to the first pitch was thrown. This was the first CSS season opener outside of the Metrodome since the 1999 season.

After the Tommies (0-1) stranded a runner at third in the top of the first, the Saints (1-0) plated three runs in their first at-bats of 2011 as Kyle Moody (Maple Grove, Minn./Osseo HS ) had a RBI-double and after fouling off numerous pitches Brandon Peterson (Burnsville, Minn./Apple Valley HS) drove in two with a single to make it 3-0 after one inning.

After a pair of CSS errors in the top of third, the Tommies got one run across by way of a balk. After stranding runners at second and third in the bottom of the second and not bringing a leadoff double in to score in the bottom of the third, the Saints finally extended their lead in the bottom of the fourth. Brian Marshik (Arden Hills, Minn./Mounds View HS ), Joe Link (Woodbury, Minn./Woodbury HS), and Kyle Moody all had RBIs in the inning. Brandon Peterson added a two-run double with two outs and later scored on a St. Thomas error to make it a six-run inning to make it 9-1 after four.

The Tommies cut the lead to 9-3 in the top of the fifth with a two-out, two-run double. The Saints got one those runs back in the bottom of the sixth when Brandon Peterson drove in his fifth run of the day with a double off the top of the wall.

St. Thomas made it interesting in the top of the seventh by driving in three runs to make it 10-6. However, Kyle Jensen (Wyoming, Minn./Forest Lake HS) entered the game in the eighth and shut the door on the Tommies by sitting down the six batters he faced to make the final 10-6.
