Everybody want's to go faster, we build faster cars, we jump out of planes; anything that gets the blood pumping. People even take a machine built specifically for snow, and race it across open water. You might be thinking "do people really race snowmobiles across water?". Not only do people do this, but there is a whole organization dedicated to this particular sport which is the International Watercross Association.

Before we get more into this sport lets just blurt out the obvious question which is "isn't this why we have jet skis?" Yes we do have jet skis but every person is looking for that adrenaline rush and what better way to get that rush by just racing a machine that could sink at any moment across a body of water.

Getting back to the Superior Watercross Shootout, WEBC is hosting the event on August 17th and 18th in Superior, Wisconsin on Barker's Island. There will be two different competitions held over the weekend, one competition is the drag race, and the other race is the oval race which will be held on Saturday; and then it is championship Sunday, which will consist of the championship races for the oval, and drag racing.

The International Watercross Association or IWA was born in 1977, but it took almost 10 years since the birth of this sport to have an organization designed specifically to help regulate, and make the sport safer. Since that eventful day in Grantsburg, Wisconsin back in 1977, the sport has grown in popularity, and so has the IWA.

After reading, this do not think you can just go grab your 1991 Polaris snowmobile and start racing across Lake Superior, because in order to get a machine that was not designed to run over water, let alone stay afloat; you need to do some fixing up on your sled. In order to race your sled you need to do these things like sealing the gaps, and removing the oil injection tank, and even after that you still might not have all the right equipment to try this on your local lake.

So if you think watching sleds go zooming across water sounds like a blast then come on down to Barkers Island in Superior, WI on August 17th-18th and watch kids as young as 14 compete in oval and drag races; and remember these are professionals and even drinking a case of beer does not make you a professional, so instead leave the racing to the these specific individuals.
