Pretty soon neighborhoods all across the country will ring of the constant sounds of firecrackers and other types of fireworks. I for one am not a fan of the repetitive noise of them, but I know for all my pets it is an even bigger nightmare for them including the cats. Unfortunately, it is also a time when you see fliers and posts online abut lost pets that get spooked and run off. That is why it is so important to be proactive to help your pet get through this holiday.

Being prepared beforehand is the best way to help keep your pet safe. The first thing is to make sure you have pet ID tags on their collars with their name and your phone number in case they are found by a kind neighbor. Also microchipping is crucial in case their collars come off. If your pet is microchipped make sure the information is current and up to date.

Take a picture of your pet so that you have a current photo just in case they do get away. Also, if you have a fence or gate make sure that there are not any spots where they can get out. I have already had my youngest dog escape once this year from a small hole in the fence that I was not aware of.

During the Fourth of July celebrations leave your pets at home. They do not need to go to a BBQ or fireworks, the best place for them is to be safe at home in a familiar environment and you will be able to relax and have a good time. You might want to put them in a room with music or the TV on with their favorite blanket or bed, food, water and toys.

If you have guests over at your house make sure to let them know to be aware of the animals when they are coming in and out of the house and possibly put signs on doors as a reminder to them to be mindful of your pets. Try your best to keep pets away from a hot grill and utensils that are sharp or might have some food on them, pets are curious and will try to investigate if they are within their reach.

Lastly talk to guests about feeding scraps to your pets, many types of people food will make a dog get an upset stomach and other things such as chicken or steak bones could cause them to choke. Try to clean up areas quickly before your pet gets to them if they are outside with you or near where you are all eating.
