Tom’s Notes: Plenty of Hockey and Basketball Action Across the Northland This Week
The Duluth Heritage Sports Center was the place to be on Thursday night.
Mini-mites. Squirts. Girl’s varsity and boy’s varsity hockey games.
Duluth East hosted Grand Rapids and it was a great hockey environment for families of all ages.
The Duluth East band, cheerleaders, mascot all played a part in the special event that was heard on ESPN560 WEBC and My 9 TV.
Special for many reasons.
The Duluth Northern Stars held senior day for their eight senior girl’s hockey players.
The game was scoreless after the first period, but the Northern Stars went on to beat Superior 5-0.
And in the boy’s varsity game, again a scoreless first period. Avery Peterson scored for Grand Rapids, to give them a 1-0 lead. About: 22 seconds later Ryan Lundgren scored for Duluth East to tie the game at 1-1 after two periods.
The game winner came from Miers Moore in the third period as the ‘Hounds topped Grand Rapids 2-1 in a non-conference game. The Moore goal came on a power-play chance.
Duluth East will host Eden Prairie on Saturday and the Thunderhawks will host C-E-C on Tuesday of next week. They are now 9-4 on the year. Grand Rapids will also host Hockey Day Minnesota next week as well, on January 19th.

Hoops busy night too.
Special night for Lakeview Christian Academy and Duluth East in boy’s high school basketball. They met at UMD’s Romano Gym. Last year they had to turned people away for the game at Duluth East.
Thursday the Greyhounds beat Lakeview Christian 103-77. The state’s all-time leading scorer, Anders Broman had 29 points in the loss.
In other games, the 1st place Superior Spartans beat Cloquet at home 67-35. Grand Rapids won a conference game vs. Pequot Lake 58-36. In other games:

The UMD men’s hockey team returns to action this weekend at Amsoil Arena for a two game series with Michigan Tech. The games will mark the final time the teams will be meeting in WCHA during the regular season. The Bulldogs move into the new NCHC hockey conference next year, while the Huskies will remain in the WCHA.
Both games will be on My9 starting at 7pm. The Saturday game will feature the Bulldogs wearing special pink uniforms to raise money for the Essentia Health Foundation. UMD taking bids online now at UMDBULLDOGS.com
