The Minnesota Twins have formally announced that 38-year-old power hitter Nelson Cruz has signed with the team for the 2019 season and maybe longer.

According to TwinsBaseball.com, Cruz agreed to a one-year, $14 million contract.  The deal reportedly includes a $12 million club option for 2020 with a $300,000 buyout.

Signing Nelson Cruz, who will server as the Twin's designated hitter, is a great move because it adds real power and veteran leadership to the young roster.

Cruz has hit at least 37 home runs in each of his past five seasons and he has the reputation of being a great teammate to have in the dugout.  This should help a very young team stay focused and play the game the right way over a very long season.

I also think Twins leadership is banking on Cruz to also be somewhat of a mentor for Miguel Sano, who has the potential to be a power hitting force but has had one season after another derailed due to his inability to take care of his body.
