Two Superior High School Students Plan “Tailgate to Recovery” Flood Relief Benefit

Three months after flooding devastated the Twin Ports, families and businesses are still working hard to recover from the destruction. In the wake of the flood, two Superior High School students have decided to dedicate a senior project to helping their community recover.

One of the requirements to graduate from Superior High School is to complete a senior project. Ben Erickson and Brandon Gustafson have developed their senior project into a service learning opportunity to help their community recover from the flooding of June 2012. The project, titled "Tailgate to Recovery", will offer 100% of the proceeds to the Superior Douglas County Flood Relief Fund maintained by the United Way.

As the title of the event suggests, it will be a tailgating party leading up to a special showing of the Wisconsin Badgers-Purdue game on Saturday, October 13. The party will kick off at 10:30 am between WITC and UWS in the green space area with games for kids, 50/50 drawing, and other door prizes given away throughout the duration of the event. At 11 am, the Badgers-Purdue game will be shown on a big outdoor blow-up screen. Following the game, three local bands will play into the evening, with everything wrapping up around 8 pm.

Erickson and Gustafson point to this event not only as a way for them to give back, but also as a great way to get the community together as they continue to heal after the flooding.
