If you are considering going to college or maybe going back to school to finish your degree the University of Wisconsin System is making it easier and more affordable than ever! They are launching a free tuition program at their 12 colleges throughout the state of Wisconsin.

The program is called The Wisconsin Tuition Promise which manifested itself from Bucky's Tuition Promise which is already established at The University of Wisconsin in Madison. Here is how it works: Starting this fall residents of Wisconsin who's family makes less than $62,000 a year will have any tuition and fees waived that are left over after financial aid has been applied.

Joe Gow who is the chancellor at UW-La Crosse said to News8000.com:

There will be students who couldn’t afford to come and join us– now they will be able to do that. And we’ll have very motivated students. We’ll grow our enrollment and be able to help the state’s workforce in the future. So really, it’s a winner all around.

Undergraduates will be eligible for the waiver for eight semesters. Students seeking associate degrees and transfer students would be eligible for the waiver for four semesters.

Crunching the numbers this works out to an average of $4,500 per student over four years. The school system has enough to cover the first year of this program at a cost of 13.8 million and will look for state funding for the years after that. Students will automatically be considered for the Tuition Promise Program when they apply for financial aid.

Here is a list of the 12 Wisconsin Colleges that are part of the Tuition Promise Program:

  1. UW-Superior
  2. UW-River Falls
