A major road reconstruction project begins Monday, May 20 in Cloquet which will impact travel in the area through the summer.

According to the Carlton County Transportation Department, the Washington Avenue reconstruction project will close the roadway to through traffic.  There will be a signed detour using Highway 33, Carlton Avenue and old Highway 45.

Work on the roadway between 14th Street and 22nd Street will begin after school is out and must be completed before school starts in the fall.

Traffic will be able to access businesses and churches in the corridor, with some limitations based on construction operations.

In their public notice, the Carlton County Transportation Department says that home owners will have access to their property throughout the project, however there may be times when traffic is delayed or diverted due to construction of sanitary sewer, water main or storm sewer crossings.  At these times, expect the roadway to be open by the end of the day.

There will also be a 3 to 5 day period of limited access when concrete needs to cure.  Home owners may be required to park on the street or around the corner during this time.

Motorists are reminded to drive with caution around workers and to please plan ahead to allow for extra time reaching destinations in the project area.
