8th Annual Duluth-Superior Operation K9 Event Happens August 11

It goes without saying that law enforcement K-9's have made a big impact on crime fighting in our area.  Over the past few years there have been numerous stories about their assistance in assault, drug, and murder cases. Whether they're sniffing out and solving the crimes directly or acting as protection for their human partners in dangerous situations and calls, the K-9 teams play an integral role in law enforcement.

At the same time the K-9 teams are an incredible outreach tool - which is not to take anything away from the serious roles they play in law enforcement.

It's that outreach - and the chance to both see and interact with the K-9's - that will be in the spotlight at an upcoming event.  It's the 8th annual Operation K-9 and it's happening Thursday, August 11 at the football field on the University of Wisconsin-Superior, bordering Belknap Street in Superior.

From 4:00 PM until 7:30 PM, law enforcement officers and K-9 teams from Northland departments will be on hand.  Some of the partner communities participating include Duluth, Hermantown, and Superior Police Departments and St. Louis County and Douglas County Sheriff's Offices.

The event is an opportunity for the general public to see the K-9 teams in action.  A variety of demonstrations will happen and there will also be opportunities for people to meet and interact with the K-9's from the agencies supported by the Northland Law Enforcement K-9 Foundation.

In addition, a variety of law enforcement vehicles and equipment will be on hand to tour.  There's a silent auction, food and beverage, and K-9 souvenirs to purchase - with all proceeds going to the Northland Law Enforcement K-9 Foundation.  The organizers have also planned lots of family-friendly activities - so there's something for everyone and all ages.

That tie-in for the event with the Northland Law Enforcement K-9 Foundation is vital to its future.  Robbin Champaigne, president of the K-9 Foundation explains:

"K-9's are an amazing resource for law enforcement, and do so much to keep our communities safe.  But they're expensive to purchase and train, and as our agencies are constantly trying to trim costs, we appreciate all the help we can get from the public to support our K-9 programs."
