All Natural Surface Trails Temporarily Closed in Duluth
Recently, the City of Duluth Parks and Recreation Department urged area outdoor enthusiasts who were interested in accessing trails in Duluth to be observant and play it safe as it's easy to damage trails this time of year.
They reminded everyone that it's usually this time of year when trails temporarily close to all users so that they are protected. Well, that time has officially arrived.
They announced Tuesday that despite the wintery forecast this week, they have temporarily closed all-natural surface trails due to the annual spring thaw. The trails will remain closed until further notice.
This is because if used on foot or by bike, the wet soil conditions will significantly damage these critical assets. As they do every year, the City anticipates reopening the trails once surface conditions improve. However, we know that spring weather conditions are unpredictable at best, so everyone is asked to hold tight until the time is right.
If you're still looking to get outside in the meantime to get some exercise, you can can still do that on paved and gravel surface trails.
Paved and gravel surface trail opportunities for walking or cycling include:
- A one-mile section of the Munger State Recreation Trail from Pulaski Street to Beaudry Street
- The Campus Connector Trail between the College of St. Scholastica and UMD and along Tischer Creek
- The Cross-City Trail from Bayfront Park through Lincoln Park
- Duluth Lakewalk
- Beaches along Minnesota Point
- Old Hartley Road
- Amity Creek Equestrian Trail
- Duluth Winnipeg and Pacific Railway (DWP) Trail
- Waabizheshikana (formerly known as the Western Waterfront Trail)
Also, a reminder that all City of Duluth cross-country ski trails remain open for skiing as long as snow covers the trails. Hiking on ski trails is not permitted while snow is on the ground.
