Can You Pull Over To Use Your Phone In Minnesota?
The hands-free law has been in effect since August 1st in Minnesota. This law makes it illegal for any motorist in the state to touch their cell phone for any reason while behind the wheel.
Not everyone has obeyed the law. Thousands have received citations since the new law began. On the very first day the law went into effect, someone was even pulled over for texting their friend about the law while driving. Sigh.
According to the Minnesota State Patrol, they are still pulling people over for not obeying the law to this day.
The law has also led Minnesotans to start pulling over on the side of the road to text, thinking it is a loophole or a solution to the hands-free law. However, according to MSP, it is illegal to pull over to use your cell phone on a busy interstate or highway.
The Minnesota State Patrol encourages everyone to find a convenience store or rest stop if they need to use their cell phones. This is the safer option for you and everyone else.
In late October, it was reported that more than 5,000 people had received citations since the first of August.
