Duluth Firefighters ‘Go Pink’ For Breast Cancer

Members of the Duluth Fire Department are always trying to save lives and keep us safe; sometimes that mission happens in ways other than the expected.

The Duluth Fire Department and the Duluth Firefighters Local 101 have joined forces to bring awareness for prevention and early detection of breast cancer.  During the month of October, they've decided to wear official pink-colored uniform shirts.

This month's effort isn't a new one for the department, and it's one they look forward to.  They've worn similar shirts for several years now to support breast cancer survivors along with those whose fight has just begun.

Duluth Fire Chief Shawn Krizaj shared the excitement that the department has for the breast cancer awareness mission:

"The Duluth Fire Department is proud to continue the tradition of wearing pink uniform shirts to bring awareness while showing support for the members of our community who have been diagnosed with breast cancer.  While this is voluntary, every year, I appreciate how many of our staff chose to wear them throughout the month."

In years past, there has also been a fundraising effort happening at the same time; the shirts have been sold to the general public to raise funds for the American Cancer Society.  While the shirts won't be available for purchase this year, the Duluth Fire Department encourages the general public to consider making donations to the organization directly.

While the breast cancer awareness campaign took on by the Duluth Fire Department aims to reach the general population, for some - there are deeper connections.  Duluth Firefighters Local 101 President Adam Casillas shares:

"We have had several of our member's spouses go through the battle of breast cancer.  Because of this, it is extremely important to us to show support and raise awareness for them, as well as all others who are currently fighting or has fought this disease.  Awareness and early detection are the key to fighting and beating this disease."
