Duluth native Kara Goucher finished in 5th place in the Boston marathon with a time of 2:22:54. She came in second among American runners, Californian Desiree Davila finished just before Kara with a time of 2:22:38.

Goucher told the Boston Marathon website that, “I have been to the Olympics and I have won a medal at the World Championships,” said Goucher. “But the 2009 Boston Marathon stands as the highlight of my career. I loved preparing for it and loved racing it. I wish that I could have won, but nevertheless it is the greatest running experience I have ever had. I did the best I could and Boston embraced me for that. The support in Boston was nothing that I had ever experienced before. It was a thrill of a lifetime to have people cheering my name for the full 26.2 mile race.”

Kara, the Duluth East graduate, now lives in Portland, Oregon with her husband Adam, and her son.
