Times have changed!  The City of Duluth Parks and Recreation Department is now offering a new program that allows players a way to interact and participate in a group sports activity without leaving their home.

The partnership with GGLeagues will provide an online E-sports platform for interested people to take part in.  E-sports gives the opportunity for kids and adults to compete against each other in a non-traditional means.  City of Duluth Recreation Specialist Brett Odegard explains:

"We are excited to be offering this great new opportunity to the Duluth area.  E-sports will allow people to compete with others in our community outside of more traditional sports [options]."

With the initial offering, the E-sports gaming option will offer Rocket League (3v3, any device), Rocket League (1v1, any device), Madden21 (1v1, Playstation and Xvox), Super Smash Bros. (1v1, Nintendo Switch), Fortnite (Solos and duos on any device ages for 13 and up), and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe (1v1, Nintendo Switch).

The activities will be offered league-style through GGLeagues.  Each league will consist of an eight week season.  Games will be held at the same time and day each week with a flexible rescheduling policy.  At the end of the season, participating players will compete in a two-week playoff and championship event.

At the end of that playoff period, a champion will be crowned.  The winner of the league will be crowned the champion of the Minnesota E-Sports League.  Winners for each region will get a GGLeagues Champion shirt and medal.

As far as competition goes, play will be split up into different age divisions.  A Youth Division will consist of kids age 8 to 12 years old.  A Teen Division will consist of kids ages 13 to 18 years old.  There will also be an Adult Division.

The season will start the week of January 24, 2022.  In order to play, participants need to purchase a Winter E-Sports Pass for $40.00. To get started, go to duluthmn.gov/parks/register.  Then, click on the Youth and Adult sports tab and fill out the required information.  Registration will remain open through January 10.

Participants need to have their own gaming console or computer to play on, an email address, own the game you are registering to play, and have the ability to play "live".

All games will be monitored by GGLeagues.  Players will be held to a Code of Conduct to maintain a fun and safe gaming atmosphere.
