Duluth Police Welcome UMD Students With 699 Chapters of Rules

The University of Minnesota Duluth is ready to begin their 2022-2023 school year. The majority of UMD students will be moving into their residences between August 25-28.

It's an exciting and busy time for everyone and the Duluth Police Department wanted to make sure they reached out to send their well-wishes to UMD students during 'Welcome Week' and freshman move-day.

They did just that with the following message Tuesday on the Duluth Police Department Facebook page:

The Duluth Police Department wants everyone to have a safe UMD Welcome Week and freshman move-in day. We are reminding individuals of the below expectations to have a safe and fun move-in.
Good luck to the students at the University of Minnesota Duluth. We wish you a good school year!

However, rather than leave it at that, they next decided to remind students of some basic rules to follow and things to know as they arrive. The reminders included:

Zero tolerance policy for violations of city ordinances and state statutes (links to these were included in the post)
Follow move-in traffic reroute/detour signs
Be careful and aware of increased pedestrians/bicycles/etc.

On the surface, reminding students of some basic things to keep in mind makes perfect sense. However, the key here is that first reminder. Zero tolerance policy for violations of city ordinances and state statutes, followed by handy links so that students could familiarize themselves with what exactly they are.

Well, if you click on the link you'll see that that this task likely involves more reading than students will do all year.

The Duluth City Ordinances link brings up 51 chapters of action packed local legislative code. Meanwhile, the State of Minnesota statues link brings up a whopping 648 chapters of laws to keep us all in line.

Remember, ignorance of the law excuses no one and there's zero tolerance policy, so better start reading and committing all of this to memory!

Granted, a lot of these would likely never come into play for the average college student but c'mon! I literally laughed out loud when I saw the abundance of ordinances and statutes that popped up by clicking the links provided by Duluth Police.

I think the vast majority of UMD students will do just fine and stay out of trouble. Personally, I'd like to welcome students back and I urge them to study, take care of their property, be a good neighbor, look out for one another and please drink responsibly.

Basically, have a great, productive year and don't be an a**hole.
