As earlier recall involving Hill's Prescription Diet i/d Digestive Care dog food has been expanded.  The United States Food and Drug Administration announced that they have added product lines to the initial recall that dates back to January.

The concern isn't that the food is necessarily unsafe for consumption by pets; the FDA is cautioning consumers about potentially unsafe levels of Vitamin D in the product, which can lead to illness or fatalities in dogs.  A number of pet owners have reported such cases to the authorities in connection to Hill's Prescription Diet i/d Digestive Care dog food products and that has resulted in at least three class action lawsuits - according to news reports.

Medical experts and veterinarians repost that symptoms of elevated Vitamin D levels in dogs include:

  • Vomiting
  • Loss of appetite
  • Increased thirst
  • Increased urination
  • Excessive drooling
  • Weight loss

Hill's has provided a recall list on their website, along with details on what to do with remaining product.
