Historic Duluth Chinese Restaurant Closing End Of August

One of Duluth's favorite Chinese restaurants with historic ties is set to close at the end of the month. Its roots go all the way back to the 1950s with several notable events happening in its past.

Huie's Chopsticks Inn will be closing on September 1st. The last day of business will be August 31, 2022. The restaurant has been at 505 East 4th street since the 1990s. But its history and family ties go back decades more.

I found an old article in the Duluth News Tribune about the Huie family and their restaurants. Joe Huie's Cafe was the first restaurant that served Chinese-American cuisine on Lake Avenue from 1951-1973.  Following that, Huie's son Wing Ying opened the Chinese Latern which many people still remember to this day. That restaurant burned down in 1994.

Not long after the Chinese Lantern burned down, Joe's nephew Ping and his wife Lee opened up Chopsticks Inn. They brought many of the old recipes from the family business.

I saw a rumor online that this business was closing on September 1st. I called them to verify, and it is true. Their last day of business is indeed August 31st. I asked if they could share why the business is closing and the answer is that the owners are retiring after a long career.

So if you want some of your favorite Huie dishes, you better hurry in. You've only got a few weeks to enjoy their food.
