The statement says the pursuing deputies observed the man exit the vehicle and swim away in the river. An extensive search operation was launched after they lost sight of him in the water.

The Sheriff's Office says ground and air resources were deployed in the search, which continued through the night. The search operation ended around 9 a.m. Friday when Chisago County Water Patrol deputies recovered his body a short distance downstream from where his vehicle entered the St. Croix River.
