From an astrological standpoint, this August has been one to remember. On Tuesday, August 1, we witnessed the Sturgeon Moon, which was the first supermoon of the month. However, we knew then that on Wednesday, August 30, something even rarer would occur.
Tonight is the big night when we will get a look at a Super Blue Moon and it should be quite the sight to behold. Sitting just 222,043 miles (357,344 kilometers) or so away, which is more than 100 miles closer to the August 1 supermoon, it will be the closest full moon of the year.
According to Space.com, the term "Blue Moon" has nothing to do with the color of the moon, the name refers to the fact that it's the second of two full moons that fall within a calendar month. Therefore, Wednesday's full moon is defined as a Blue Moon because it is the second full moon of August.
Just like August's first full moon, the Sturgeon Moon, this Blue Moon will also be a supermoon, meaning it will occur during a period when the moon is closer to the Earth.
So, when is the best time to witness the Super Blue Moon? According to Astronomy.com, the Moon reached perigee at 11:54 A.M. CST Wednesday morning. Perigee is a term for the closest point to Earth in our satellite’s orbit, which is not perfectly circular. From then on, we all await sunset.
The perfect time to see the Super Blue Moon in all its glory is the exact moment it is exactly opposite the sun. For Wednesday's Super Blue Moon, this 180-degree separation from the sun will happen at around 8:36 p.m. CST.
It should be easy to see with the naked eye and even better with a telescope. Get a good look if you can because there won't be another Blue Super Moon until 2037.
