New Regional Landfill Begins Accepting Garbage From Five Counties
July 1st was the start of a new era of waste management in St. Louis County. The first semis pulling garbage transfer trailers arrived at the Regional Landfill in Virginia, Minnesota. The landfill is in an agreement with 5 area counties to accept their garbage, now that the Superior Landfill has closed.
Superior Landfill Closure
The Superior Landfill, located on Mike Moccassin Road, has been the destination for area garbage for decades. Now that the landfill is at capacity, new solutions are needed.
The Regional Landfill In Virginia
Resource Renew, formerly known as WLSSD, has entered into an agreement with the Regional Landfill in Virginia, Minnesota. Now garbage from Carlton, Lake, Cook, St. Louis, and Koochiching Counties will be transferred to Duluth.

County Board Chair Mike Jugovich applauds the efforts to bring together a solid waste solution:
"Our landfill is now a true regional solid waste solution," said County Board Chair Mike Jugovich, who also serves on the county's Solid Waste Subcommittee. " We're doing things properly. We're doing things right, and we're doing things in an environmentally friendly manner. So this is another opportunity to show St. Louis County is a shining star for environmental stewardship."
New Solid Waste Campus Planned For Canyon
St. Louis County Environmental Services expects to handle double the volume of garbage now. They expect the landfill to remain operational long into the future. They are also working to develop a new solid waste campus in Canyon, Minnesota, which is approximately halfway between Duluth and Virginia.
