Wildfire Reported In Minnesota’s Boundary Waters Canoe Area

Another wildfire has started in Northern Minnesota. This wildfire was reported on Thursday, May 22nd, around 3 PM near Horse River in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area (BWCA).

The U.S. Forest Service - Superior National Forest issued a notice of the fire in the Kawishiwi Ranger District, east of the Horse River in a remote area. As of last night, fire crews were still assessing the fire and options to contain it.

Officials ask that you stay out of the area for safety reasons and to allow the firefighters access and resources for fighting the fire.

Authorities also request that you do not fly any drones near the fire area, and remind you that operating drones in federally designated wilderness areas is illegal.

Fire Danger Remains High In Northeast Minnesota

Several massive fires broke out in recent weeks in Northern Minnesota. They have been the most damaging fires for the area in over 100 years. Fortunately, containment has been improving for the wildfire, but the risk of more fires like this recent Boundary Waters fire is still high.

There is currently an open-pit burning ban in much of Northern Minnesota. Check the Minnesota DNR's website frequently for updates.

Campfires are allowed, but be very careful. Extinguish the fire thoroughly when finished. Keep a fire extinguisher nearby to quickly put out any flames. Use your discretion; if there is a dry brush nearby, don't light a fire.
