Spirit Mountain’s New Chairlift Will Honor Duluth History
It’s hard to imagine while the fall colors are just starting to show, but Minnesota’s long, snowy season is right around the corner. Before we know it, the flakes will be flying, skis and snowboards will be pulled out of storage, and eager winter lovers will be back at it.
A Big Upgrade for Spirit Mountain
This year, Spirit Mountain in Duluth is introducing a brand-new $3 million chairlift. It will replace two older triple-chair lifts that have faithfully carried riders up the hill for more than 50 years. The new four-person lift can move at least 2,000 people per hour on a quick four-minute ride to the summit.

Not only is it faster and more efficient, but it’s also designed to be safer, quieter, and more comfortable. Riders will enjoy updated cushions, footrests, and a smoother experience overall.
The Public Gets to Choose the Name
Instead of picking a name themselves, Spirit Mountain is inviting the public to weigh in. Voters can choose from a list of names that honor Duluth’s rich logging, mining, and maritime history. Everyone who casts a vote will be entered for a chance to win a 2025/26 season pass. Voting runs until midnight on September 30, and the winning name will be announced on October 1.
The Naming Options
Here are the contenders: Bolter, Boom Tender, Chopper, Cutter, Gandy Dancer, Hasher, High Rigger, Highline, Hoister, Jack Line, Jagger, Roper, and Stinger. Each name tells a story tied to the region’s history, giving the new lift more than just a fresh coat of paint—it gives it character.
This new chapter at Spirit Mountain is exciting for both the ski hill and the city of Duluth, promising a better ride and a stronger connection to the area’s heritage.
