Being a mail carrier for the United States Postal Service isn’t just a tough gig, it can also be risky. New data shows that attacks on postal workers went up last year, and now a national campaign is aiming to bring those numbers down.

One of the most common dangers on the job led to more than 6,000 injuries in just one year. It’s not only a serious threat to the safety of postal workers, it can hit homeowners hard in the wallet, too.

A new initiative called "Secure Your Dog, Keep Deliveries on Track" kicked off on June 1st, with the goal of cutting down on dog-related injuries to mail carriers. The USPS is sharing simple safety tips to help keep both pets and postal workers safe.

Alongside the campaign, the Postal Service revealed the top 20 cities for dog bites, and one Wisconsin city landed on the list. Milwaukee was the only one from the state to appear, coming in at number 17 with 20 reported incidents in 2024. Leading the list was Los Angeles, with a staggering 77 attacks.

A handful of other Midwest cities also showed up near the top of the list, including Chicago, St. Louis, Cincinnati, and Cleveland, all landing in the top 10 for reported dog attacks.

USPS Tips to Prevent Dog Attacks

To help avoid dog attacks, the Postal Service recommends:

  • Keeping your dog in a separate room or area during the time your postal worker typically arrives
  • Making sure all gates are closed if your dog is outside
  • Keeping dogs secured on a leash
  • Never accepting mail directly from the carrier while your dog is present
  • Avoiding letting children retrieve the mail from the carrier

The USPS is reminding dog owners that injuries to mail carriers can lead to thousands of dollars in costs, including medical expenses, lost wages, uniform replacements, and compensation for pain and suffering.

If a dog is considered a risk, mail delivery to that address may be suspended until the situation is addressed. It’s an important reminder to keep everyone safe, as postal workers are simply doing their jobs and should never be put in harm’s way.
