Kwik Trip Just Made New Currency Policy At All Of Its 900+ Stores
You used to be able to pick up a penny off the ground for good luck. Now, people don't even want them, including our U.S. Treasury Department.
Back in May 2025, the final order for penny blanks was placed. The blanks are used at the Mint to create currency. According to the Federal Reserve, that final order of blanks for the pennies will last until early 2026. Those will be it - the last order of new pennies for the United States of America.
As of now, pennies can still be used as a form of currency, but the reality is, only about 55% of Americans use a penny to pay for an item less than once a month. YouGov shared that about 31% of Americans never use pennies to pay for items.

A press release was shared by Kwik Trip on Thursday, October 2nd, stating a new change at their cash registers. As our government gets closer to stopping production on pennies, Kwik Trip realized that at some point they will run out of pennies at their stores. Due to the government not providing guidance on how to proceed once the penny is no longer made, all purchases made in cash will be rounded down to the nearest five cents. This will impact all Kwik Trip and Kwik Star locations and is being done to ensure a guest-friendly approach.
Example Of The New Round Down Policy At Kwik Trip Stores
If you bought $2.04 of bananas and are paying with cash, your price is $2.00.
If you bought $2.04 of bananas and are paying with a credit card, you will pay full price, $2.04.
The Round Down Policy Does Not Apply To All Transactions
If you are paying with a credit card or digital transaction, the round-down policy will not be in place.
Can You Still Pay With Pennies At Kwik Trip and Kwik Star Locations?
