It's that time of year, there's that one person in every household who is itching to get outside and mow the lawn. Before you pull out the lawn mower, though, did you know that there's a time frame when it's actually illegal to mow your lawn in Minnesota?

I've all had at least one neighbor who would mow his lawn at ridiculous times of the day. This happened when I was growing up and he would mow super early in the mornings on the weekends. Come on, dude, I'm trying to sleep in!

When it's Illegal to Mow Your Lawn in Minnesota

The University of Minnesota Extension says that the 'mowing season' is the last week of April through early November. Whenever it is that you end up getting out and mowing, be aware of the time frame when you're not allowed to mow.

The reason it's illegal to mow at certain times is because of noise ordinances.

I looked into the noise ordinances for Minneapolis, St. Paul, and Rochester to see what the different rules are, since they can be different based on your city. What I was able to find is that in Minneapolis, you aren't allowed to operate outdoor equipment like power lawnmowers between the hours of 10 PM and 6 AM. In St. Paul, the hours are 10 PM to 7 AM. And quiet hours in Rochester, are 11 PM to 7 AM.

Long story short: During your city's quiet hours you're not allowed to mow your lawn. If you aren't sure what your city's quiet hours are, I think the best rule of thumb is just don't do it between 10 PM and 7 AM. In most situations, you should be fine.
