You've heard of FOMO-- the fear of missing out-- but have you heard of JOMO? That's the joy of missing out, and here are four things Minnesotans love to miss!

In a world obsessed with FOMO, Minnesotans know there’s real bliss in staying home, skipping plans, and embracing the quiet. From dodging work event invites to avoiding crowded festivals, here are the top moments when folks here in the North Star State proudly feel the joy of missing out.

Even if you're an extrovert who thrives on getting out and seeing others or attending events, there are some times when you'd just rather stay home and curl up on the couch. Then there are those who actually prefer staying home rather than heading out to be with others. The crew over at Solidaired just surveyed residents of each state to figure out which events we most looked forward to skipping-- and in which states JOMO was most prevalent.

Here in Minnesota, we're apparently more likely to want to get together with our friends, family, and coworkers, because the Land of 10,000 Lakes ranked 40 out of the 50 states when it comes to experiencing JOMO. Nevada, Georgia, and Florida residents are the most likely to embrace JOMO, while New York, Missouri, and New Jersey residents are the least likely to embrace JOMO, Solitaired found.

But here in the Bold North, there *are* four events we're most likely to want to skip-- and stay at home catching up with our favorite shows, reading a book, or just hanging out with our furry friends while we check our phones:

  1. 78% of Minnesotans are eager to get out of work holiday gatherings (ranks 7th highest in the U.S.)
  2. 76% of Minnesotans are eager to get out of work happy hours
  3. 69% of Minnesotans are eager to get out of reunions (ranks 9th highest in the U.S.)
  4. 46% of Minnesotans look forward to skipping large events like sports or concerts

Avoiding family events, such as reunions, also made the list of things to find joy in avoiding, as did weddings and birthday parties. And when it comes to getting out of going to these events, those of us in Minnesota (and other states across the country) tend to use these excuses the most:

  • 51% - Not feeling well
  • 46% - Too tired
  • 42% - Family obligations
  • 36% - Work obligations
  • 19% - Need to save money

One of the things we like to do in Minnesota when we're staying home is sipping a lovely adult beverage... or two... or three... or four. In fact, Minnesotans really like to enjoy a glass of vino. Keep scrolling to see just how much wine we bought in Minnesota last year!
