A widespread voluntary recall has been issued for Jif Peanut Butter.  The J.M. Smucker Company is recalling specific Lot Codes of their popular peanut butter food product due to salmonella concerns.  While the recall effort is only for a small number of Lot Codes, it involves a large amount of their product line.

This recall does include Minnesota and Wisconsin.  Additionally, it does include Jif Peanut Butter products that were sold in the Twin Ports area.

On-going investigatory details suggest that "epidemiologic evidence indicated that Jif brand Peanut Butter produced at the Smucker Company facility in Lexington, Kentucky was 'the likely cause of the illnesses in this outbreak'".  At the present time, two people have been hospitalized in connection to the peanut butter involved in the recall.

According to details shared by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, the recalled Jif Peanut Butter has the potential for being contaminated with salmonella.  This organism "can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems". Relatively healthy people can also experience symptoms of salmonella infection - displaying itself with "fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain". Some more dramatic, serious situations can arise if the salmonella infection gets into a persons bloodstream - causing "severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e. infected aneurysms), endocarditis, and arthritis".

Customer should check the Jif Peanut Butter jars that have in their home for the Lot Codes involved in the recall.  Those Lot Codes would exist within the series of numbers between 1274425 and 2140425.  Here's a way of short-cutting the identification process:  Each of the Lot Codes involved in the recall would end in "425"; start there and then work from the beginning of the number to verify.
