Ask anyone in the Vikings Organization, and they will tell you "We're not rebuilding." With a sophomore quarterback, plans for a full defensive overhaul, major holes needing plugging on the offensive line, a need for more threatening offensive weapons, and a coaching staff that some would say is suspect, Rick Spielman is certainly walking the line of what any normal person would call a full-out reconstruction project.

The team announced Saturday the release of three well-known players, Pro Bowl lineman Steve Hutchinson, Anthony Herrera, and defensive back Cedric Griffin. Coach Frasier had the following to say about the releases:

It was a tough decision as we move forward and prepare for the upcoming season and the future of our organization. All three individuals have meant a great deal to the Vikings organization both on and off field over the years. We wish all of them the best and thank them for their service to the Minnesota Vikings.

All three players become free agents as of Monday, and will begin the process of working out for other teams. The most notable release of the three was that of Steve Hutchinson, who has been a strong anchor point for the offensive line, as well as a good mentor for younger players. Injuries have plagued "Hutch" recently and age is becoming an increasing factor in his performance, making the $7 million payday hard to stomach for the Vikings.

The cuts loosen up $13.4 million in cap room to do some more "remodeling" as free agency and the draft kick into full gear this spring.
